From Tragedy to Triumph
The Philippines is a predominantly
Roman Catholic country. Therefore, the observance of Holy Week is a significant
event in the lives of Filipinos. As a period of reflection, penitence, and
devotion, Holy Week commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. The Holy Week in the Philippines is a solemn affair, brimming with a
plethora of religious practices and traditions that give the faithful a renewed
sense of purpose and meaning.
As a former private Catholic school student, I vividly remember our religion
teacher's lectures on Holy Week. He would passionately explain the importance
and symbolism of each day leading up to Easter Sunday.
In elementary, we would attend Palm Sunday mass, which marked the beginning of
Holy Week. I can still remember the hustle and bustle of people trying to
acquire palm leaves or "palaspas," which were blessed by the priest
during the mass. It was always exciting to receive these palm leaves, and we
would proudly display them in our homes as a symbol of our faith. However, this
year, my family and I could not attend the Holy Week festivities for various
reasons. It was a disappointment not to be able to participate in the
activities that have been a part of our tradition for years. Nonetheless, I
still carry the memories of those days with me and hold them dear.
In sum, the relevance of Holy Week extends beyond the religious aspect. It
teaches us the values of sacrifice, humility, compassion, and love. Finally, it
helps us become better members of our community and live according to Christ's
teachings.
